Ramadaan: A Time For Reflection And Renewal

Rahshanah Damonse reflects on what the month of Ramadaan means to her.

Ramadaan is a time for reflection and renewal.

This month comes with family get togethers … Congregation at mosques every night for prayers (taraweeg/trafi). Children anxiously awaiting iftaar (breaking of the fast) to enjoy all the treats on the table.

But it also reminds us of how fortunate and blessed we are. How to be mindful of not wasting food. To become mindful of the tongue and the power it has. To become compassionate towards one’s neighbour (that’s where the tradition of sending a plate with some nibbles originated from, so that those who may not have will receive from their neighbour). It’s not compulsory to send something back and in the olden days the fisherman would send some of their catch of the day, or vegetables, etc.

May you all have a lovely week filled with endless blessings (barakah) and God’s mercy (ragma).
