Cream And Custard Heaven - A Journey Of Cape Malay Heritage

While in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Cariema Isaacs is transported to Cape Town’s Belgravia Road with when she tastes cream and custard heaven.

.

While in Rotterdam, Netherlands I’m transported to the vibrant streets of Cape Town. Belgravia Road, more specifically.

There, my senses were captivated by the irresistible allure of Wembly Bakery’s cakes, pastries and tarts. Within its walls, a treasure always awaited me, the cream and custard fillings remain unmatched.

Until I crossed the oceans, to the heart of Rotterdam, I stumbled upon a similar haven of bliss at The Gallery Kitchen. Here, the whipped fresh cream and custard meet harmoniously on my palate, creating a symphony of flavours. The light and airy meringues and every morsel of flaky and crispy pastry, adorned with delicate fragments of fresh fruit, added a touch of “home” to my experience.

It’s a welcome surprise that the fruit remained unglazed, allowing its natural sweetness and zesty tang to shine through. The cream and custard, while light in texture, possessed a richness that spoke volumes of their freshness. No preservatives or stabilisers tainted their purity.

And did I partake in this divine feast? Oh, I savoured each and every creation with unabashed delight. I am literally in fresh cream and custard heaven!

Side note: It’s clear I’m ready to write another cookbook!

Read more about my journey to self-discovery next week.
